From Bottle To Bowl

It can feel impossible to avoid buying products wrapped in plastics these days.

So here is 1 way to reuse your 'waste' and create something new and beautiful.

Below is the step by step instructions on how I made my recycled plastic bowl.

The bowl photographed above took around 15 green bottle caps and 9 milk bottles to make, which still did not fill my mould - you always need more than you think! So prep a few more just in case.

HDPE plastics are safe to melt in a home oven as long as the room is kept well ventilated but a mini oven that is used outside is perfered, this is according to my own research so please do your own before beginning.

I used -

  • An oven

  • A large amount of clean HPDE plastic (the plastic with a number '2' in the center of the recycling triangle on all plastic objects)

  • 2 metal bowls - 1 smaller than the other depending on the thickness you require

  • A metal knife

  • Tea towels

(All items may be ruined or damaged so please use old items or items bought specifically for this project)

Making -

  • Clean all your plastic or the residue will discolour your object

  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees

  • Cut up your plastic into small enough pieces to comfortably fit into your bowl

  • Place the plastic in the larger metal bowl in whatever layout you prefer, keeping it reasonably central.

  • Place into the oven until all the plastic is melted (time varies with

  • Scrape the excess plastic off the sides of the bowl so it's in one lump

  • Place the smaller bowl on top and put back into the oven

  • Wait for 5 - 10 minutes then remove from the oven

  • Immediately place layers of teatowels over the bowls and press down firmly

  • Let fully cool then remove the 2 bowls to reveal your bowl
